Can I communicate RS232 with the Nextion display?
Do I need some special hardware?
Can someone point me to an example?

You can’t. “True” RS232 has bipolar (positive and negative) signal levels while the Nextion’s and most MCU’s UARTs use unipolar signals. A negative voltage at the input would destroy them. There are specific level converters like the MAX232 by Maxim Integrated for that.
